Understand the choice

ATS or MTS: which changeover suits your site?

A transfer switch selects the source supplying a load. In a typical standby installation, it changes between the utility supply and a diesel generator. Automatic and manual systems meet different operational needs.

ATS

Automatic transfer switches

An ATS combines switching equipment with controls that monitor the supplies and manage changeover. For a compatible standby generator, the control sequence can request a start, wait for a suitable generator supply and transfer the load.

It is useful where a site needs a planned response to mains failure without waiting for somebody to operate a switch. That can include unattended premises, farms, commercial buildings and industrial facilities.

Specify the required sequence, sensing, delays, alarms and generator interface. Automation must match the operating needs of the site.

MTS

Manual transfer switches

An MTS provides operator-controlled changeover between supplies. It can be a practical option where trained staff are available and the business can accept the time needed to start or connect the standby source and perform the agreed procedure.

Applications can include planned maintenance, temporary generator connections and premises with an attended backup-power plan.

Manual operation keeps the control arrangement simpler, but it relies on an appropriate operating procedure and somebody being available when required.

Continuity matters. A standard open-transition ATS is not a UPS. There is an interruption during changeover, and a generator needs time to start following a mains failure. Tell us which loads cannot tolerate an interruption.

The system, explained

How generator changeover works.

The normal and alternative supplies feed a changeover arrangement. With an open-transition system, one source is disconnected before the other is connected. Interlocking is fundamental to preventing an unintended connection between the sources.

Utility and generator supplies feed an interlocked transfer switch, which connects one source at a time to the site load. Automatic controls or a manual operator initiate the changeover.
Concept diagram for open-transition changeover. Not a wiring diagram. Protection, earthing and neutral arrangements are project-specific.
  1. Monitor the normal supply

Automatic controls detect the configured supply conditions. Appropriate delays help avoid unnecessary changes for momentary disturbances.

  2. Establish the standby source

The system requests a generator start where configured and checks that the alternative supply is acceptable before permitting transfer.

  3. Transfer the load

The switching sequence separates the supplies and connects the load to the available standby source.

  4. Return when the supply is stable

When the mains has recovered, the agreed sequence retransfers the load and allows the generator cooldown before stopping, where configured.

Exact thresholds, timings and functions depend on the equipment and commissioning settings. An MTS uses a manual operating sequence. Mains paralleling and closed-transition transfer require a separately engineered arrangement and any applicable network approval; see our synchronised generator packages.

Quality you can specify

UK-manufactured panels.
Support from TEAM FW Power.

We can discuss UK-manufactured ATS and MTS panel options as part of a standalone switchgear enquiry or a complete generator package. Our team helps turn your operating requirements into a clear supply and installation scope.

Good panel specification reaches beyond the amp rating on the label. Component selection, accessible terminations, clear identification, enclosure suitability and the supporting documentation all deserve attention.

Ask us to include the drawings, declared ratings, test documentation, operating information and agreed commissioning support you need. Manufacturer, component origin, build details and lead time are confirmed for the proposed panel.

What goes into the right ATS or MTS specification?

These are the questions that make an enquiry useful. You do not need every answer to contact us; tell us what you know and where you need help.

01

Current and load duty

Consider the greatest current that may pass through the panel on either source, including mains operation. Check the type of load, starting demand, switching duty and any derating. A generator’s kVA rating does not automatically establish the correct switch size.

02

Phase, voltage and neutral

Confirm voltage, frequency and phase for both sources. The pole arrangement must follow the earthing and neutral design. TPN means three phase and neutral; it does not, by itself, confirm a switched-neutral design.

03

Fault level and protection

Coordinate the transfer equipment with the available fault current and protective devices. Manufacturer-declared withstand or conditional short-circuit ratings and their conditions matter. The switching amp rating is not a substitute for this check.

04

Environment and enclosure

Identify indoor or outdoor location, moisture, dust, ambient temperature and corrosion exposure. Specify the required IP protection and material for the installed arrangement, including cable entries. An IP code alone does not resolve condensation or corrosion.

05

Cables, access and space

Provide cable sizes, conductor material, numbers of conductors, entry direction and available space. Allow for termination capacity, bending radius, supports, access and maintenance. Fixing centres are important when replacing an existing panel.

06

Controls and serviceability

Agree the generator start interface, supply monitoring, transfer sequence, alarms and remote indications. If maintenance bypass or isolation is required, define that arrangement early. A bypass option does not automatically make every transfer interruption-free.

Documentation and standards. Ask for the applicable product and assembly conformity information for the quoted equipment. IEC 60947-6-1 addresses transfer switching equipment; IEC 61439-1 and IEC 61439-2 are relevant to power switchgear assemblies as applicable. The appropriate BS EN/IEC requirements and edition must be confirmed for the project. We do not infer certification from component brands or a panel photograph.

From brief to operation

Supply, integration and ongoing support.

FW Power can review a transfer switch alongside a new diesel generator, a suitable used generator, or your existing equipment. Tell us whether you need supply only, a replacement panel or a wider installation proposal.

Agree responsibilities for the electrical design, installation, protection settings, testing and handover before work begins. Our installation and commissioning service can be discussed as part of the project scope.

Functional testing should cover the agreed failure and restoration sequence, alarms and interaction with the generator. Continue to inspect and exercise the system under a planned generator maintenance programme, following the equipment instructions.

Transfer switch questions

Clear answers.
Better specifications.

Read our automatic transfer switch guide for more background, or speak to the team about your application.

What is the difference between an ATS and an MTS?

An automatic transfer switch uses controls to change between supplies when the agreed conditions are met. A manual transfer switch needs an operator to make the changeover. Both require a suitable switching arrangement for the installation. Choose around the acceptable interruption, staff availability and operating plan, as well as cost.

Does an ATS provide uninterrupted power?

An ordinary open-transition ATS does not. It disconnects one source before connecting the other, and a standby generator also needs time to start and establish a suitable supply after a mains failure. Loads that cannot tolerate that interruption may need a UPS or a separately engineered continuity solution.

What size transfer switch do I need for my generator?

Start with the maximum current through the switch in both mains and generator operation, supply voltage and phase, and the load characteristics. Then check the utilisation duty, ambient conditions, fault level, protection coordination and cable terminations. Generator kVA alone is not enough to select a panel.

Do I need a 3-pole or 4-pole transfer switch?

The neutral and earthing design determines whether the neutral needs to be switched. Three-phase equipment may use different arrangements, and TPN describes a three-phase-and-neutral supply rather than proving that the neutral is switched. Have the proposed pole arrangement checked against the complete installation.

Can I fit an ATS to an existing diesel generator?

Potentially. FW Power can review the generator controller, remote-start interface, voltage, frequency, protection and existing installation. Send the generator model and controller details with your enquiry. A motorised changeover switch on its own is not necessarily a complete automatic transfer system.

Can a manual changeover switch be used with a temporary generator?

Yes, where the complete installation is designed for that purpose. The inlet or connection arrangement, source separation, earthing, protection and operating procedure all need review. An MTS alone does not provide automatic generator starting or automatic fault response.

Are UK-manufactured transfer switch panels available?

FW Power can discuss UK-manufactured ATS and MTS panel options. The build specification, switching components, enclosure, controls, documentation and lead time are confirmed for the proposed package. Photographs show examples of ATS panels; they do not establish the specification or availability of every option in the selector.

Can you quote for a bespoke ATS or MTS panel?

Yes. Include your single-line diagram if available, load current, supply arrangement, installation environment, cable details, space constraints and required functions. Tell us about any bypass, remote indication or special project requirements so our team can review the scope before quotation.
